Of course windmills are associated with the Dutch like no other building is associated with any other country. (I say that provocatively so that someone can correct me. Maybe Stave churches with the Norwegians? Most buildings in my mind are better associated with a time than a place.) But why are they windmills and not wind pumps as their primary function was to move water?
The bottom photo is one of the 19 windmills in Kinderdijk. Our guide pays a €500 tax to keep the water out of his yard. While most of the pumping is done with diesel or electric pumps, the old ones still work. The top photo is the main wheel inside a windmill.
